KMA Spends ˘462 million on Demolition
Exercise The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has
disclosed that it spent ˘462 million to execute the
first phase of its exercise to rid the city centre of
unauthorized structures.
|
The second phase, which begins next week Monday, is
estimated to cost the city authority ˘660 million. The
amount covers payment of allowances to personnel, fuel
and hiring of equipment.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, the
Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, Madam Patricia
Appiagyei said though the money appears huge, it is
worth spending to curb what she calls 'unprecedented
levels of indiscipline' in the metropolis.
She said the first exercise was a success. She disclosed
that 94 recalcitrant traders have been arrested and
prosecuted for defying the KMA’s order.
Madam Appiagyei cautioned shop owners against
indiscriminate display of their wares.
She said before the second phase of the exercise begins
there will be an extensive public education for the
people to understand that it is meant to beautify the
city and not to victimize them.
